The breakout star of DC’s Suicide Squad was Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, hands down. Robbie had already planned to continue on with the character, stating before the film’s release that she wanted to helm a film full of DC’s heroines and villainesses.
It would seem that she got her wish.
The Hollywood Reporter has announced that David Ayer (who wrote and directed Suicide Squad), will be directing and producing GCS, with Robbie starring. No word on her costars yet, but the Gotham City Sirens team in comics has traditionally been made up of Harley, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.
The script will be penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who has already written scripts for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes 3 (in the Guy-Ritchie-verse) and the reboot of Tomb Raider. Needless to say, it is heartening to know that a female screenwriter will be penning the script for this one, particularly after DC’s Wonder Woman failed to have any women working on the story or screenplay.
There is no news on the release date of Gotham City Sirens, but it looks like the film has already been pushed to the fast track. Hopefully, DC will still give the film some time in development, given the massive reshoots Suicide Squad underwent as a result of pushing the project through too quickly.
